Y6 SATs
English tuition in Muswell Hill, N10
English tests consist of three papers testing reading comprehension, grammar and spelling which typically take place from May during their final school term. Writing is not tested although teachers make an informal assessment.
Comprehension questions range from from straight forward information retrieval to the more advanced end-of-paper questions, often involving inference or deduction, where children are required to make more detailed written responses.
The Grammar paper involves quite advanced knowledge of some sophisticated concepts and adult terminology, involving for example parts of speech, tense rules and punctuation.
Maths tests comprise 3 papers, one testing arithmetic and two testing reasoning. For the arithmetic paper children need a sound understanding of the number system, good number fact retrieval and efficient arithmetic methods.
For the two reasoning papers children are required to apply their problem-solving skills across a range of topics: geometry; handling data; standard units; money; algebra; sequences.
