Key Stage One Tuition

Key stage one tuition requires children to attend our weekday primary classes. In addition Dedicated Saturday classes are available for very young children on request and parents are encouraged to visit the class room to view the learning

Reading

Early reading involves a number of skills: from pre-reading skills (using picture cues; memorising stories and phrases; pointing to the words etc) through to mastery of auditory and visual skills as children learn to “sound out” words and also memorise their shapes. Well-written, graded “scheme” books are great for building confidence and enjoyment until children are ready to progress to “real” books; all are available to borrow from our cabin library.

Writing

The Muswell Hill Tuition Centre - handwritingLearning to write should be enjoyable and rewarding as the children master skills: holding a pencil correctly; making their first marks on a page; learning the letters of the alphabet and their names, shapes and sounds as well as correct formation; starting to sound simple words; writing one, then more, sentences independently. It is important to go at the child’s pace and follow their interests:  motivation and enjoyment are key

Maths

Maths lessons at the Muswell Hill Tuition Centre, London, N10In nursery and reception children learn about numbers to ten and beyond; by the end of year two they are expected to be confident working  with numbers to 100 using age-appropriate arithmetic methods within that range. Children should also have a rudimentary understanding of simple fractions as well as early problem-solving skills where they are able to choose the correct arithmetic skills to apply. Visual aids and practical equipment are on hand to ensure children understand and embed new concepts.
