Tuition for 11 plus exams

Successful 11+  selective entry demands very high level attainment and often intensive training across a broad range of subjects. Exams typically take place in the year six Autumn term. It is advisable to begin training early to maximise chances; year four is often cited as a good starting age to start tuition for eleven plus.

Tuition in English for 11+

English exams typically involve comprehension and analysis of a sophisticated text, often from classic children’s literature; this is often accompanied by follow-up questions involving grammar and spelling rules.   The second half of the paper usually requires a high-level written composition in a similar style, often a continuation of the story.

Tuition for eleven plus exams in Maths

Maths selective entry requires candidates to have high-level numerical and arithmetic skills as well as an increasingly advanced knowledge of other maths topics: geometry; statistics and probability; measures; algebra. Candidates are required to have high-level problem-solving skills.

Verbal Reasoning

Verbal Reasoning training comprises fun word games and puzzles and children enjoy solving brainteasers such as  anagrams, lurkers, synonyms, antonyms, mini-crosswords etc

Non-verbal Reasoning

Non verbal reasoning involves analysis and decision making relating to picture puzzles. Children are trained to spot non-verbal relationships (analogic; isomorphic; serial etc). Matrices and codes are a regular feature and children are tested for spatial awareness.

7+ TRAINING

Increasingly,  independent schools,  require selective entry into year three; tests are set during year two, typically at the start of the Spring term. Again, children sit formal written tests in reading writing and maths and occasionally verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
