Tuition in GCSE ENGLISH
GCSE English comprises two literature and two Language papers. Literature students typically study a Shakespeare play and texts from Victorian and 20th Literature as well as a poetry selection.
Students are required to demonstrate advanced written comprehension skills involving detailed literary analysis of a given extract as well as in depth knowledge of these classic texts.
Essay writing requires them to generate sufficient ideas to make a suitable response to a given question and present those ideas in a way which will impress the examiner. Structural skills, an ability to expand and elaborate on a point and written expression are key.
The Language papers require students to analyse a hitherto unseen extract from a familiar literary genre; paper one typically involves a more literary or fictional piece; paper two will be feature more factual or informative writing such as news articles, formal letters and advertisements. In both papers students are required to create a written composition following the rules of the genre and in an appropriate style.
